The City
Hamburg, which's official name is Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg, is the second-largest city in Germany after Berlin and the 7th-largest city in the European Union. Hamburg's port is the largest in Germany being located at the head of the Elbe estuary to the North Sea. Therefore the city is also referred to as the "Gateway to the World".
Besides Hamburg's financial and economic importance it is also a significant European science, research ,education and culture hub.
Hamburg is a major international and domestic tourist destination with its two UNESCO World Heritage Sites "Speicherstadt" and "Kontorhausviertel". The city's rivers and canals are crossed by around 2,500 bridges, making it the city with the highest number of bridges in Europe.
