Chennai formerly known as Madras, is the fourth largest city in India and the capital city of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Located on the Coromandel Coast of the Bay of Bengal, Chennai has a population of 4.2 million.

Chennai's economy has a broad industrial base in the automobile, technology, hardware manufacturing, and healthcare industries.

The University



The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) is an elite engineering and technology school. It is officially recognized as an Institute of National Importance by the Government of India and is regarded as one of the finest engineering institutions in India. Founded in 1959 with technical and financial assistance from the Government of the erstwhile West Germany, IIT Madras was third among currently fifteen Indian Institutes of Technology.

The campus is located about 10 km from the Chennai Airport, 12 km from the Chennai Central Railway station, and is well connected by buses.

NOTES: To get a taxi from the airport to the dormitory you can call 044-24732020. A taxi should cost between 180-250 rupees.
Students should be aware, that they have to bring their own mattress (or buy one in Chennai) for the dormitory.
