Alexandra Klos a student of the Master's program Medical Technologies decided to spend her 3rd semester in Scotland at the University of Strathclyde. In this blog post, Alexandra shares her experiences of studying in the friendly city of Glasgow.
I spent my third master's semester at the University of Strathclyde in the capital of Scotland, Glasgow. With its four universities and around 160,000 students, Glasgow has turned into an international student city. The city has a lively, young atmosphere, which is reflected in a variety of hip restaurants, cafes, bars and clubs. If you want to experience the "real" Scotland and its people, there are also some traditional pubs where live music is played every night.
There are plenty of reasons why Glasgow has been voted the friendliest city worldwide. The people are all super helpful and open-minded. Although, communication with the Glasgow people is often difficult due to their Glaswegian dialect. It is also fun and exciting to learn this dialect. Glasgow is also known for its great mix of cultures and people. That is the reason why the slogan "People make Glasgow" can be found everywhere in the city. In addition to the Scottish Opera, the Scottish Ballet and the National Theatre of Scotland, the city also offers many exciting museums. So even on a rainy day, the city will not get boring. And best of all, admission to all museums is free! Glasgow lies on the border between the Scottish Lowlands and Highlands. If you miss the mountains of Innsbruck, you can reach the Highlands in less than an hour. You can go hiking or mountain biking here. The landscape is impressive, James Bond and Harry Potter were filmed here for a reason. The sea and Edinburgh, Scotland's most famous city, are only about an hour away and worth a trip!
The university is located in the middle of the city centre. Here, for example, is a large sports centre with a gym, swimming pool and numerous sports courses but also some cafes and bars that invite you to sit together with friends. Of course, there is also the library and many other study places on campus, where I also spent a lot of time, as studying at the University of Strathclyde is generally quite demanding. That's because the courses here do not only include exams but also various extra submissions. Moreover, the focus of study here is more on biomedical engineering. Therefore, I chose courses as "Atanomy", "Physiology", "Biomechanics", and "Biomedical Electrical Engineering".
The semester abroad in Glasgow was a unique experience! I was very impressed by the diversity of this country, the kindness of the people and the stunning nature. I am happy and grateful for the great experiences and many new international friendships. I can only recommend Glasgow as a destination for a semester abroad!
