Prof. Dr. Stephan Schlögl

As an MCI faculty member, I'm involved in both teaching and research activities. In particular, I explore various types of technologies and how they might affect humans' lives. I evaluate whether people are able to use new tools and gadgets, and investigate aspects that could potentially increase their overall user experience. While lately my work has mainly focused on human-AI interfaces, I am still very much interested in all kinds of interaction modalities, particularly in those that promise novel and more exciting ways of handling modern computing technology.

Professional work experience
  • 11/2013 - present
Assistant/Associate/Full Professor - MCI - The Entrepreneurial School, Austria
At MCI I am involved both in research and teaching activities. My main research interest lies in the area of Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) and Interaction Design, with a particular focus on natural language as an interaction modality. Furthermore, I am investigating aspects of Computer Supported Cooperative Work (CSCW), and Information and Knowledge Management. My teaching currently involves classes in Software Engineering, Business Intelligence, Artificial Intelligence and Human-Computer Interaction.
  • 11/2012 - 10/2013
Postdoctoral Research Fellow - Institut Mines-Télécom, Télécom ParisTech, France
At Institut Mines-Télécom, Télécom ParisTech I was part of the vAssist project team whose goal was to provide multilingual voice controlled home care and communication services for seniors suffering from chronic diseases and/or (fine-) motor skills restrictions. As a postdoctoral research fellow in this team I was involved in the development of an adaptive communication interface that should allow for a simple and efficient interaction with elderly users. This task included the investigation of people interacting with voice-based natural language user interfaces as well as the early stage prototyping of these interfaces using the Wizard of Oz prototyping method.
  • 10/2008 - 10/2012
PhD Researcher - Trinity College Dublin, Center for Next Generation Localisation, Ireland
At Trinity College Dublin I was part of the Centre for Next Generation Localisation (CNGL), which is a dynamic Academia-Industry partnership with over 100 researchers developing novel technologies addressing the key localisation challenges of volume, access and personalisation. My work there involved applied research in the area of Interaction Design tools and techniques for speech and natural language based interaction. In particular I was interested in Wizard of Oz prototyping and how it can be improved for designers and researchers.
  • 11/2005 - 10/2007
Research Assistant - MCI - Management Center Innsbruck, Austria
At MCI Management Center Innsbruck I was conducting applied research in the field of Usability and Human-Computer Interaction (HCI). I analysed different usability measurement methods for web-based applications, conducted qualitative and quantitative usability analysis and taught 5th semester students the basics of HCI and Interaction Design. Furthermore I acted as a tutor for Database Management Systems and web development, and was involved in various research activities investigating web communities, social software and e-learning.
