Science Award of the Tyrolean Chamber of Commerce for innovative Master's theses | Focus on practical solutions
This year, two MCI graduates received the coveted Science Award of the Tyrol Chamber of Commerce.
Stefan Brida, BA MA, graduate of the Entrepreneurship & Tourism program received the award for his master's thesis: "Is the vacation hotel industry ready for Dynamic Pricing? Fairness Perception of Dynamic Pricing in the Holiday Hotel Industry in Tyrol and Vorarlberg."
Thomas Margreiter, BSc MSc, graduate of the Mechatronics & Smart Technologies program, wrote his master's thesis on: "Development of GaN based modular converter for fast scanning magnets of particle accelerators" and received the award for it.”
Both theses are appreciated for their practical relevance, excellent scientific approach and social relevance.
The work of Thomas Margreiter, which deals with the MedAustron particle accelerator, which is used in the medical field for cancer therapy, clearly demonstrates the practical aspect. The magnets for deflecting the charged particles, which move through the accelerator and are fired at the tumor, require high-performance power supplies. For this specific application, a modular converter based on gallium nitride components was developed and an advanced controller was implemented, which combined shows excellent results in extensive tests and validate the use of the power supply on real accelerator magnets.
The practical focus is also evident in Stefan Brida's work: dynamic pricing is already accepted in the vacation hotel industry by the majority of guests surveyed. Only among guests from Germany and Holland in the age group 60+ with a low income & education level as well as with a low familiarity with Dynamic Pricing, fairness concerns have been empirically proven. However, the study shows that with the right measures in the area of customer communication, pricing strategy, price information & employee training during the introduction, the cash flow increase potentials of Dynamic Pricing clearly outweigh the acceptance risks of the guests in the vacation hotel industry.
Anita Zehrer, jury member at MCI, is delighted: "The awarding of the Master's theses by the Science Prize of the Tyrolean Chamber of Commerce once again demonstrates that the practical orientation and networking with the real world benefit students at MCI."
