Students in the bachelor’s program in Social, Health & Public Management (SGPM) recently participated in the "Mental Health First Aid" course, led by Manuela Pillei Schenner from pro mente tirol. Pro mente offers counselling, care and support for people who need professional support and help due to a mental health crisis or illness.
The course focuses on early intervention skills: the goal is to recognize and support individuals showing early signs of psychological distress to prevent the development of serious mental health issues. The idea behind it is simple: the sooner support is provided, the quicker recovery can begin. Joint exercises and role plays to apply the acquired knowledge were an integral part of the seminar alongside the theoretical knowledge transfer. Students also discussed what they can do for their own mental health.
Participants expressed their enthusiasm for the course content. "I found the 'Mental Health First Aid' class incredibly interesting and educational," shares a student. "The tips and strategies for mental health first aid were particularly helpful. After the course, I feel more confident and comfortable responding appropriately to mental health changes in others, both at work and in my personal life.“
Another student adds, "Mental health is becoming increasingly important in our society. Starting our studies with such a foundational topic was a real asset for the entire class."
The "Mental Health First Aid" course is offered to a wide range of age groups and professional levels. At MCI, this course is an integral part of the SGPM program and aims to be accessible to all students, equipping them with essential skills in managing mental health issues.
