Engaging Guest Lecture with ECJ Judge François Biltgen

Date 2022-05-27

In a special lecture in April, students of the Master's program "International Business & Law" received insights into the work of a judge at the Court of Justice of the European Union.

François Biltgen looks back on a long and successful career in various fields of law as well as politics. After working for more than ten years as a lawyer in Luxembourg and his activity as a member to the city council of Esch-sur-Alzette, he was elected to the Chambre des Députés. Afterwards he was, among other things, serving as Minister of Labor and Employment, Minister of Higher Education and Research as well as Minister of Justice in Luxembourg.

Since 2013, François Biltgen serves as a judge at the European Court of Justice (ECJ), and, as judge-rapporteur, contributed to fundamental judgments in the field of European labor law and anti-discrimination law.

A special selection of these judgments, including some well-known judgments in discrimination cases, were also examined by our students together with course leader Philipp Weinkogl, and afterwards presented and discussed with Judge Biltgen. In addition, the tasks of the European Court of Justice and the most important types of legal proceedings were explained. Overall, Judge Biltgen gave our students an exceptional insight into his work as a judge at the European Court of Justice.

We are very pleased to be able to welcome such a personality as a guest lecturer and hope that other Master's students will also receive this honor in the coming years.
