International Universal Health Coverage Day, December 12

Health Systems, Public Health interventions and their importance for the SDGs

On December 12, 2012, the United Nations General Assembly endorsed a resolution urging countries to accelerate progress toward universal health coverage (UHC) – the idea that everyone, everywhere should have access to quality, affordable health care. On 12 December 2017, the United Nations proclaimed 12 December as International Universal Health Coverage Day (UHC Day). International Universal Health Coverage Day aims to raise awareness of the need for strong and resilient health systems and universal health coverage with multi-stakeholder partners.

To commemorate this day, Ayman Fouda, a lecturer at MCI | The Entrepreneurial School^®, reiterates the significance of UHC and its relevance for our students in the Masters programmes, “International Health and Social Management” and “European Master in Health Economics and Management” with a statement on one of the important learning outcomes of these programmes this semester, “UHC is a core topic that our students will address in class from different social, economic, and political perspectives. Our students will understand the importance of UHC and study the reforms and endeavours in developed and developing economies to achieve it. They will be able to compare system performances, identify gaps, and synthesize extrapolatable lessons. Furthermore, they will be able to develop possible health-related interventions to address some of these challenges from an international development perspective.”

In the current semester for these two programs, students will immerse in, develop and deliberate on ideas and concepts regarding Universal Health Coverage and Public Health interventions in the courses "International Welfare Systems" and "Law and Public Health Practice".
