Heat Pump Focus Day - iDM visits MCI

Date 2024-03-01

Partner company iDM presents heat pump concept to students of the dual bachelor's program Smart Building Technologies

February 28 was all about sustainable heating technology in the dual bachelor's degree program Smart Building Technologies - Head of studies Werner Stadlmayr welcomed representatives from partner company iDM Energiesysteme GmbH to the "Heat Pump Focus Day".

Students from the 2021 and 2022 intake were given an intensive insight into the intelligent integration of heat pumps in smart planned and networked buildings at the end of their study phases. This also gave students who are currently completing their practical phases at the other seven partner companies of the dual bachelor's degree program a comprehensive insight into the concept of the heat pump.

After an introduction by Werner Stadlmayr, Christoph Bacher, Technical Managing Director at the Austrian market leader for heat pumps, presented iDM's product portfolio. With a market share of 43%, heat pumps represent the largest sector of heat generators on the Austrian market - 60,000 heat pumps were sold in Austria in 2022. The students were able to gain an overview of the product portfolio and the types of heat pumps sold by iDM: In addition to air and geothermal heat pumps, which are mainly used for room air conditioning via, for example, an underfloor heating system, domestic hot water can be used via Kompatk heat pumps for, for example, shower systems and hand wash basins.

The students were also equippend with a comprehensive insight into international developments in the heat generator market with a focus on potential savings and the sustainable use of resources in room air conditioning. By integrating a heat pump into a PV system with an output of 5 kWP (kilowatt peak) alone, around 45% of the PV electricity can be used directly every year! With approximately 85% of energy consumption being accounted for by space heating and hot water, the significance of sustainable heating technology in smart private and industrial buildings is evident.

Heat pumps are increasingly being used in buildings with heating outputs of 35 kW and more - Hannes Laister and Lukas Kerschbauer from iDM's product sales department provided insights into the individual design types of large heat pumps in the industrial sector.

Equipped with this knowledge, the two cohorts will now return to the practical phases lasting several weeks, where the content learned at the MCI will be consolidated with professional experience in the partner companies.

We would like to thank iDM's corporate partners for the detailed information on the "Heat Pump" innovation project and look forward to the next focus day plans!
