Hello everyone, we are Elly and Tessy and send our warmest and sunniest greetings from Stellenbosch, South Africa! We have been here for over three months now since we started our studies in July, and the experiences we have had are simply unforgettable. Life in Stellenbosch inspires us with its diversity and vibrancy. Besides the university courses, there is so much to discover here: whether it's Cape Town, a visit to a winery, a relaxing day at the beach, or a hike in a nature reserve. This environment really has something for everyone.
As far as the university is concerned, the workload is quite demanding. Nevertheless, the content is extremely exciting and offers a completely different perspective that we are not familiar with from Europe. We have also learned to be patient, because sometimes the organization takes a little longer. But the openness and warmth of the South Africans ensure that solutions are always found.
Of course, the country also brings some challenges with it. These range from small things, such as the cold in the flats in winter due to poor insulation, to the daily confrontations with social inequality. These experiences shape you and go beyond purely academic learning: an understanding emerges that we are all connected and yet shaped by our unique stories and circumstances.
Our semester in South Africa has far exceeded our expectations. It is not only more enriching, but also more challenging than we could have ever imagined. Therefore, we would like to urge anyone thinking about studying abroad, especially in a place as complex and beautiful as South Africa: Seize the opportunity! The lessons you will learn, the friendships you will make and the personal development you will encounter during this time will stay with you and shape you for a lifetime.
