My name is Laura and I am sending you sunny greetings from beautiful Thailand – a country where culture, hospitality, and adventure come together!
I have to honestly admit that it took a lot of courage for me to travel to Thailand alone. I thought long and hard about whether I should take this step, because the idea of traveling to Asia alone for the first time was more than a little daunting. So, I'm all the happier now that I plucked up the courage – it was the best decision of my life!
At first, it was a real culture shock. Bangkok is huge, and even after three months I've probably only explored a tiny fraction of the city. The language barrier was a challenge, as many people here speak little English, but somehow, I was always able to communicate. The warmth and contentment of the people is impressive – they often live with few possessions, but radiate a deep joy that inspired me to appreciate life more consciously again. Traffic is chaotic, and it was not uncommon for me to think that my scooter taxi was about to crash into a car. The food? Fantastic, but also extremely spicy – even ‘not spicy’ is still quite fiery by European standards!
My campus experience
My semester abroad at Mahidol University International College was undoubtedly one of the best experiences of my life. The campus is beautiful, surrounded by greenery, and the courses are not only intellectually challenging but also very practical. The exchange with international students was particularly enriching – from students from Thailand to those from Texas. These encounters broadened my horizons in so many ways.
Life outside the campus was also a real adventure. Bangkok, with its blend of tradition and modernity, offers countless opportunities to experience Thai culture. From delicious street food to impressive temples, the city never ceased to fascinate me.
Of course, there were also challenges. Adjusting to a new education system and living in a foreign culture were not always easy. But it was precisely these moments that allowed me to grow and showed me how important it is to remain flexible and open.
What I gained from this semester was much more than new knowledge. I left my comfort zone and was rewarded with unforgettable experiences and a stronger personality.
My tip for you: If you are thinking about taking a semester abroad, don't hesitate! It's a unique experience that will enrich and change your life. You will experience a time that will stay with you forever!
