From April 19 to 20, 2023, a forum for universities of applied sciences took place at the FH St. Pölten on the subject of "AI Landscape / CAI" One of the speakers at this conference was Bernhard Hollaus, lecturer at the Department of Medical Technologies and head of the Health Tech research cluster at MCI. In his presentation, Hollaus emphasized the importance of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Data Analytics and presented how they are used in the study programs and research projects at MCI.
MCI offers numerous courses, especially in the Bachelor's degree program in Medical, Health, and Sports Engineering, that focus intensively on AI and data analytics, including the "Artificial Intelligence" course, where students deal extensively with this future-oriented methodology. In addition, many exciting and innovative AI and data analytics projects have already been implemented in the Health Tech research area
An example of such a project is the Tennis Swing Classifier, which aims to identify tennis stroke types through machine learning and interpret data. An example of such a project is the Tennis Swing Classifier, which aims to identify tennis stroke types through machine learning and interpret data. The focus of this project is to analyse the sequences of strokes. What this project shows is how important it is to develop the proper sensors and algorithms to collect and analyse reliable data.
In an experiment with many tennis players, more than 5,000 data sets were collected in the course of this research project, which was then used to train a neural network. The neural network was then capable of automatically assigning a type of shot to a data set, which led to an accuracy of over 94%. This shows that AI can analyse large amounts of data and recognize patterns to gain new insights.
AI can not only help in sports technology but also in the field of medical technology to help make diagnoses faster and more accurate, and personalize treatments. Overall, the Health Tech research cluster at MCI plays a major role in the further development of AI in medical and sports technology. Therefore, we can look forward to more exciting projects in the future.
