Energy transition - can we still manage it?

Forum Technology & Life Sciences at MCI invites to discussion with personalities from the energy sector

The year 2024 has only just begun and, as always, we take a look into the future at the start of the year. There are still 26 years to go until 2050 - by which time the province of Tyrol wants to be energy-autonomous. Another 26 years to generate all the energy we need from renewable sources - and that with rapidly increasing electricity demand. Is that even possible?

In its "Tyrol 2050" program, the province of Tyrol is committed to energy autonomy and climate protection and is focusing primarily on hydropower and solar energy as well as improving energy efficiency. The model of many small steps together and change at many levels should lead to the ambitious goal. In a study commissioned by the province, teams of experts from MCI, the University of Innsbruck and Wasser Tirol are working on putting the political goals of "Tyrol 2050" into figures and monitoring and supporting their implementation.

On January 17, 2024, the MCI | The Entrepreneurial School® and IV Tirol are hosting a forum on the topic of "Energy transition - can we still manage it?" to discuss the pressing questions and opportunities with experts from the energy sector from both the scientific and business environment. Dr. Angela Hofmann, Professor of Process and Energy Engineering at MCI, will give an overview of the current status of the measures and their implementation. She is co-author of the studies on the use of resources and technology to achieve the goal of "Tyrol 2050 energy autonomy".

The speakers and their keynotes:

  • Alexander Speckle, Member of the Board of TIWAG - "The contribution of hydropower to the success of the energy transition"
  • Angela Hofmann, Professor of Process and Energy Technology MCI - "Tirol 2050: Political goals vs. technical possibilities"
  • Martin Mühlbacher, Site Manager and Vice President Operations INNIO Jenbacher - "From production to product: hydrogen as the driving force behind the energy transition"

With the Technology & Life Sciences Forum, the MCI regularly offers a knowledge and discussion platform for the responsible shaping of our future. Current topics are addressed in lectures and discussions, findings are debated and solutions from science and practice are discussed.

The MCI currently operates twelve research clusters, six of which are in the field of Technology & Life Sciences. These clusters, which are designed in collaboration with partners from industry and science, deal with a wide range of issues relating to the respective cross-cutting topics and are particularly dedicated to the topic of sustainability.

Conceived as an open lecture, teaching and discussion event, the Technology & Life Sciences Forum promotes networking and exchange between students, alumni, researchers, lecturers, friends and partners of the MCI.
