The City
Rotterdam is located in the west of the Netherlands. It has approx. 633,000 inhabitants. The port of Rotterdam is the largest in Europe. From 1962 to 2004 it was the world's busiest port until surpassed by Shanghai. Rotterdam is on the banks of the river Nieuwe Maas ('New Meuse'), one of the channels in the delta formed by the Rhine and Meuse rivers. The name Rotterdam derives from a dam in the Rotte river.
Rotterdam is known for the Erasmus University, its riverside setting, lively cultural life and maritime heritage.
The University
Erasmus University Rotterdam is named after Desiderius Erasmus Roterodamus, a 15th century humanist and theologian. The university has seven faculties and focuses on three domains
- Economics and Management
- Law, Culture and Society
- Medicine and Health Sciences
The first two domains are situated at the Woudestein campus, in the east of Rotterdam. The Medicine and Health Sciences domain is located at the Erasmus Medical Center (MC) at the Hoboken campus in the west part of the city. Erasmus MC is the largest and one of the foremost academic medical centers and trauma centers in the Netherlands.
Its business school, Rotterdam School of Management, is a leading business school within Europe offering undergraduate and postgraduate programs taught mostly in English. It holds the distinguished Triple Crown Accreditation - AMBA, EQUIS and AACSB.
