The City
Tokyo is one of the 47 prefectures of Japan. It has served as the Japanese capital since 1869, its urban area housing the Emperor of Japan and the Japanese government. In 1943, it merged with Tokyo Prefecture and became Tokyo Metropolis and the popula-tion of Tokyo is estimated to be over 13.4 million, or about 11% of Japan's total popula-tion, making it Japan's most populous city.
Tokyo is considered to be one of the world's most important and powerful global cities. It has the largest metropolitan economy in the world and is a major international finance center.
Because of its history (earthquakes and World War II), Tokyo's urban landscape consists mainly of modern and contemporary architecture, and older buildings are scarce.

TIU developed an English-based undergraduate degree providing majors in Business Economics and International Relations in 2014 called the English Track Program, and the international student body has since grown to roughly 1,200 students from over 60 countries.
