The City
Izmir, historically Smyrna, is Turkey's third most populous city and the country's second largest port city after Istanbul. It is located along the outlying waters of the Gulf of İzmir, by the Aegean Sea. The city of Izmir is composed of twelve metropolitan districts, each with its own distinct features and temperament, but all headed by the Mayor of Izmir. Izmir has approx. 2.6 million inhabitants.
The University
Izmir Institute of Technology (İYTE) is a public research university. IYTE maintains a strong emphasis on the natural sciences and engineering. The medium of instruction in all the departments of IYTE is English. The campus is located on one of the most beautiful stretches of Aegean coast just outside the city of Izmir.
IYTE is widely known for being a selective and difficult university. Students often drop out early or take a longer time than normal to complete their studies. Especially, in Faculty of Engineering, only half of the students can graduate from programs in their regular time.
