The City
Lisbon is the capital and the largest city of Portugal, with a population of 552,700. It is continental Europe's westernmost capital city and the only one along the Atlantic coast. Lisbon lies in the western Iberian Peninsula on the Atlantic Ocean and the River Tagus. The westernmost areas of its metro area is the westernmost point of Continental Europe. Lisbon is one of the oldest cities in the world, and the oldest in Western Europe, predating other modern European capitals such as London, Paris and Rome by centuries. The Lisbon region is the wealthiest region in Portugal and it is well above the European Union's GDP per capita average - it produces 45% of the Portuguese GDP. Lisbon's economy is based primarily on the tertiary sector.
The University
The Universidade de Lisboa is the largest university in Portugal being the result of the merger of two former public universities of Lisbon, the former University of Lisbon, founded in 1911 and the Technical University of Lisbon, founded in 1930.
Lisbon School of Economics and Management (ISEG) was the first economics and management school to be founded in Portugal and is now also part of Universidade de Lisboa. Its campus being located in the center of the city of Lisbon, it offers numerous high standard degrees recognised by international educational entities and rankings, such as the Financial Times, AACSB and AMBA. ISEG's mission is to create, share and enhance the social and economic value of knowledge and culture in the fields of Economics, Finance and Business Sciences, in a context of pluralism and assurance of intellectual and scientific freedom, and respect for ethics, social responsibility and sustainable development.
