The City
Riga is the capital and largest city of Latvia, a major industrial, commercial, cultural and financial center of the Baltics, and an important seaport, situated on the mouth of the Daugava. With approx. 715,000 inhabitants it is the largest city of the Baltic states and third-largest in the Baltic region, behind Saint Petersburg and Stockholm (counting residents within the city limits).Riga's historical center has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the city is particularly notable for its extensive Jugendstil (German Art Nouveau) architecture, which UNESCO considers to be unparalleled anywhere in the world.
The University
The SSE in Riga was founded in 1993 as a subsidiary of the Stockholm School of Economics with a mission to provide a state-of-the-art education in business and economics that contributes to the economic and social development of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. The school is supported by the Swedish and Latvian governments as well as other sponsors. Initially, the school only provided undergraduate education through its B.Sc. in Business and Economics program.
Many SSE professors contend that the Riga program is more competitive and difficult than the SSE program in Stockholm. The admission rates for the B.Sc. program typically range between 7-10%. It annually enrolls approximately 120 students.
