MCI Alumni Weekend 2014
MCI Alumni Weekend 2014
More than a thousand guests celebrated at the MCIOn June 13 and 14, members and supporters of MCI Alumni & Friends came together to celebrate the end of the 2013/14 academic year. Full and varied program This year, too, the MCI Alumni & Friends Club marked the close of an intensive and interesting year of events with its traditional MCI Alumni Weekend, offering an exciting program as the rousing culmination of the academic year. The event began on the Friday afternoon with words of welcome spoken by Rector Andreas Altmann and a get-together of MCI graduates including the jubilee years, who learnt about and discussed the MCI’s highly promising plans for the new campus, Ph.D study programs, and the new online study program in Business Administration, etc. Presentation by the CEO of Austrian Railways (ÖBB) In the following talk given by Christian Kern, CEO of Austrian Railways, the gathering heard that the ÖBB is optimistic about the future and sees further potential for corporate growth in people’s changing mobility habits. According to the speaker, the number of railway users in Austria and their level of satisfaction are higher than ever before, and productivity at Austrian Railways is outstanding at the European level. The CEO is determined to further consolidate the ÖBB’s position in the future and to move up to join the leaders in Europe in terms of profitability, economy and punctuality. Following the interesting talk given by Christian Kern, the MCI was privileged to welcome another top-level guest, namely Professor Tilmann Märk, Rector of Innsbruck University and Chairman of the Tyrolean University Conference, who spoke about the current situation of the Tyrol as a university location. He explained that the various tertiary education facilities in the Tyrol are not hostile competitors but part of a healthy higher education market on which they complement one another and thus make the university scene more attractive. The decision to pull together in the framework of the Tyrolean University Conference is seen as a source of additional effective cooperation in the fields of teaching and research. It also underlines the importance of the goal of knowledge transfer to society. Chilling out at the MCI Summer Clubbing Socializing & Networking was the order of the night: At the MCI Summer Clubbing in the Hofgarten, graduates, students and the MCI team, as well as friends and partners of the MCI gave themselves over to the clubbing sound and a delicious buffet until the early hours. Zoological end to a successful Alumni Weekend On Saturday morning, Dr. Michael Martys, Director of Innsbruck’s Alpine Zoo, provided interesting insights into behavioral research in the animal world. The speaker explained that animals live in a space-time system based on incentives and enticements. Even though human beings are zoological creatures, he said, they cannot be treated on a level with animals; human thought and action are shaped by processes of socialization and decision-making and involve a greater degree of responsibility. Even though Dr. Marty refused to equate human beings with animals, he was able to draw fascinating parallels between human and animal behavior. Dr. Marty’s presentation brought to a close a wonderful weekend under the motto “Meet & celebrate with motivated people”.Pictures Alumni WeekendPictures Summer Clubbing

The new Medical Faculty in Linz must not be funded at the expense of the universities of applied science
The new Medical Faculty in Linz must not be funded at the expense of the universities of applied science
The MCI warns: Overdue inflation adjustment and promised increase to the number of student places are at risk! It had to happen: In spite of all protestations to the contrary, the Medical Faculty in Linz is set to become the financial nail in the coffin of Austria’s universities of applied science. “There is no money,” is the standard response from the Ministry of Science, Research and Economics. The reference is to money for the adjustment for inflation due since 2009 and money needed to increase the number of student places - measures which were unanimously approved by the Council of Ministers of the Austrian Federal Government and the Austrian University Conference and were promised with a flourish by the coalition parties before the general election, measures which are a definitive and guaranteed item in the government program announced by the Federal Government for the current legislative period. “That is overstepping the mark,” says the MCI’s Rector Andreas Altmann. “The Federal Government cannot order services and then exit the back door to avoid paying. The Ministry of Finance must provide the Minister of Science with the funds needed for the agreed measures. It is not possible to reduce the number of places for students to compensate for inflation,” the Rector adds and he continues: “I trust in the word of Minister Mitterlehner, whom I esteem highly, and in the promises made by Michael Spindelegger as Vice Chancellor and Minister of Finance and by Chancellor Werner Faymann.” Out of a total allocation to science and the universities of 1.6 billion euros for the 2013-2018 legislative period, only 62 million euros are earmarked for the universities of applied science - a mere 3.8%. And yet Austria’s universities of applied science now account for … 30% of all degrees awarded, 40% of all degrees awarded in technical subjects, and 50% of all business degrees awarded. “A solution is urgently required,” says the Rector in conclusion to his appeal to the Federal Government. “Otherwise we will fritter away our own future, undermine our competitive position and squander the trust placed in us.” More information on the subject (in German)Contact:MCI Management Center Innsbruck Mag. Innovative Master program for Bioresource & Food Engineering starting in autumn at the MCI
Innovative Master program for Bioresource & Food Engineering starting in autumn at the MCI
As of autumn 2014, the Entrepreneurial School® is offering a new Master’s program for strengthening and networking innovative and sustainable agriculture and forestry, the food industry, and environmental, energy and bioresource engineering. Applications now accepted. In the context of a model technology offensive, the MCI has greatly expanded its offering in the field of Technology & Life Sciences in the last few years. With about one thousand students now studying in this segment, the Entrepreneurial School® has established itself as a competent player in the German-speaking world. The fact that this standing has not only a quantitative but also a qualitative basis is reflected by the numerous awards received and excellent results in polls and rankings. The MCI’s latest contribution to the technology offensive is a Master’s in Bioresource & Food Engineering, which begins in autumn 2014. In order to create added value for trade and industry, society and the region, competence, research, development, innovation, net product and international networking must be systematically upgraded and strengthened in the food industry, agriculture and forestry, and in environmental, energy and bioresource engineering. With the Bachelor in Food & Bioresource Technologies introduced in 2011 and the corresponding Master in Bioresource & Food Engineering coming in autumn of this year, the MCI has set the stage for promoting innovation, know-how and an international orientation in these disciplines of the future. Graduates have in-depth knowledge in the fields of natural science, engineering and business management. They are capable of designing, optimizing and steering intelligent product development, manufacturing processes, packing and marketing for natural raw materials, healthy foodstuffs, organic functional and convenience foods, and biogenic side products, and they possess the relevant knowledge to succeed with their expertise at the regional, national and international levels. While the Bachelor’s program is available for both full- and part-time students, the Master’s is being launched with an eye to the needs of working students. Thought is being given to holding classes in English in the medium term. With the new program, the MCI is offering the business community partnerships and support in terms of research, development, innovation, infrastructure and project work.Further informationWebsite Master program Bioresource & Food EngineeringInformation on the study program: lebensmittel@mci.edu{phocadownload view=file|id=4697}ContactUlrike FuchsHeadMarketing & Communication+43 512 2070-1510ulrike.fuchs@mci.edu{phocagallery view=category|categoryid=787}
