"How is the theory of production engineering put into practice?" This question engaged our students during a field trip to the company TRM - Tiroler Rohre GmbH.

Within the lecture "Manufacturing Technology", our bachelor students in Industrial Engineering & Management deal with 154 individual manufacturing processes that are used to create a product. The 154 individual processes are divided into 6 main classes. For example, the process of sawing wood is assigned to the main class of cutting. The most important group within production technology is forming. Within this process, a product is created from a raw material.

In view of the climate crisis, more and more companies are trying to produce end products directly in house. Historically, metal casting of bells is the oldest documented process. In this process, liquid metal is poured into a prefabricated mold. Metal pipes are also produced by the casting process.

Within the lecture, Dipl.Ing. Heinrich Berthold, introduces the process of centrifugal casting, easily explained in this video.

This process has also settled at TRM for the production of high quality casting systems.Casting is followed by other processes that are shown within the lecture, namely coating with various processes such as welding. The students were also able to get an idea of many other topics from the theory in practice: process improvement methods, product creation, quality systems and controls. Tyrol is home to many companies that are highly respected specialists in certain manufacturing processes in Europe.

Tiroler Rohre GmbH has more than 75 years of experience and has established itself within the industry as a specialist, from the development and manufacturing to the marketing of high-quality ductile iron casting systems for water transport and the deep foundation of structures.

We thank Tiroler Rohre GmbH for welcoming us and giving us an extensive insight into their production, as well as DI. Heinrich Berthold for the enriching excursion in this amazing Tyrolean company!
