Practical insights for Social Work students

Exploring innovative social institutions in Munich

As part of the “Practical seminar” course, students on the Bachelor of Social Work course in 2023 visited various social institutions in Munich.

The residential and cultural center offers refugees and interested Munich residents a wide range of services, from language and vocational training to further education and workshops, comprehensive legal advice and a training bakery.

This great project began over 8 years ago, when a citizens' initiative campaigned for the preservation and renovation of the current location and was successful. Our students were given a comprehensive tour of the building (including the rooftop sports field and adjoining café) and were able to talk to employees.

Nine residents, five of whom have a mental or multiple disability and four people without support needs, live in a 280 m² villa in a typical 1920s style with a huge garden in the Neuhausen district. Following the principle of “living for help”, they perform certain assistance tasks for their fellow residents with support needs.

“We can't prove it, but we always claim that our shared flat was the first inclusive shared flat in Germany when it opened on September 1, 1989,” says one of the residents.

This concept has proved so successful that there are now ten of these shared flats in Munich and the surrounding area.
